Jill Scott, the daughter of Joyce Scott in Philadelphia Pennsylvania was born April 4, 1972. Since she was the only child, she was raised also through her maternal grandparents. Scott was educated at Philadelphia High School for Girls. Upon graduation, Scott enrolled into Temple University. While working two part-time jobs, Scott was also a teacher in Temple University. She hoped to be a English teacher at high school. The dream of becoming an English teacher at high school ended when she dropped out of high school. Following her first gigs singing at poetry events, she eventually teamed up Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. They ended up collaborating as well as co-writing You Got Me. Then, during Roots performance she came out as an artist. Afterward she secured collaborations with stars such as Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. In the Canada tour for The Broadway musical Rent She gained invaluable performance experience. She was signed by the label's first artist.
